Welcome Home to the Fox Valley

We recently relocated back to the Fox Valley after 23 years. Oh my, how it has changed. When we first moved to Appleton in 1982 as young parents of a three month old baby girl, we made our home on the south side of Appleton near East High School. Our family grew with the birth of our second daughter and we very firmly established ourselves as residents of the Fox Valley. Now we are returning as empty nesters and our interests are somewhat different.

When we originally moved to Appleton there were only a few grocery stores, the mall hadn’t been built, and 441 was just in the plans. All of that has changed. Appleton definitely rivals the larger cities such as Madison. Today the opportunities for shopping, entertainment, and outdoor activities are vast. As new returning residents of Appleton, we are excited to discover and explore all the area has to offer. We are veterans of moving and discovering new cities as this will be our seventh city and it is always fun to see what each area has to offer and why it is a good place to live.

This blog will not only be about living in the Fox Valley and the entertainment opportunities but also about all things related to homes, new construction,  real estate, and design. There will be a plethora of information and stories for all to read. As a Designer/ New Homes Specialist with Midwest Design Homes and Jon Huss Homes, I am excited to share my passion with you.

My next post will be about going down memory lane in Appleton and what we have discovered and enjoyed thus far. Stay tuned and thank you for reading.

Discovering the Fox Valley

In my previous post I spoke about returning to the Fox Valley after an absence of 23 years. There are so many new things to discover and old ones to revisit.

Over the winter holidays our family took a tour of Appleton, Kimberly, Kaukauna, and Little Chute. We visited our old house, the girl’s elementary school, and the old neighborhood. Then we decided to visit Thousand Island Environmental Center since we had just received 12 inches of snow. We rented snowshoes for a very reasonable cost and decided to venture out. Unfortunately, after about 30 minutes of trying to strap on the snowshoes (amidst much laughter), we had less than an hour for exploring. I recommend exploring Thousand Island Environmental Center during all four seasons of the year. You are sure to see something new.

I have also had the opportunity to try several of the local coffee shops. Each one has it’s own unique atmosphere and some are better for people watching than others. I enjoy the intimacy of both Seth’s Coffee and Bake Shop in Little Chute and All Seasons Coffee in Appleton. Both Copper Rock Coffee Companies are great for people watching.

This past weekend we enjoyed the indoor Appleton Farmers Market and visiting the Trout Museum. The art exhibit at the Trout Museum is free and open to the public. Local artists including Midwest Design Homes own Patt Huss have their work on display. As with all museums, the display changes regularly. I strongly suggest you check it out and look up the history of the building. It is very interesting.

I will continue to explore the area and am really excited for warmer weather and  to experience all of the free music the area has to offer.
